Eight Victims in VTA Workplace Shooting, Nine Total Deaths

San Jose, CA…Update from the Sheriff’s Dept…On May 26, 2021 at approximately 6:34AM, the Sheriff’s Office received a call of an active shooter at a Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) building located at 101 West Younger Avenue in San Jose.

Deputies arrived within minutes of the initial call and immediately ran into the building where the shots were fired. Based on the above information, the Sheriff’s Office activated the Santa Clara County Active Shooter Protocol. Multiple law enforcement agencies and fire departments within the county responded to the scene. There were a total of nine casualties as a result of this tragic incident, one of them being the suspect. An additional victim was taken to a local hospital and is currently listed in critical condition. Deputies located the shooter, an adult male suspect. deceased nearby the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound when deputies made contact with him.

During the investigation. Sheriff’s Office personnel utilizing Explosive Ordinance Detection (EOD) K9’s located several possible suspicious devices on VTA property. The Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to render the scene safe. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Alcohol. Tobacco, Firearms. and Explosives (ATF) also responded to assist with processing the scene.
