15 Year Sentence for Salinas Man in Shooting Death of his Brother

Monterey, CA…Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced today that on June 1, the Honorable Rafael Vazquez sentenced Mark Nall, age 30 of Salinas, to 15 years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for the shooting death of his brother. Nall had previously pled on April 4, 2021, to a charge of voluntary manslaughter and admitted an enhancement for the use of a firearm.

On January 24, 2019, Nall visited with the victim at the victim’s residence. The two brothers proceeded to drink alcohol together. At some point in the evening, a verbal argument ensued causing Mark Nall to exit the victim’s residence and walk towards his own vehicle. Upon reaching his vehicle, Mark Nall retrieved a handgun and walked around his vehicle and shot the victim seven times. The victim had no weapon and was only holding a beer can. Despite this, Mark Nall continuously claimed he acted in self-defense when he spoke to Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives when they arrived on scene and interviewed him later. He explained that he thought the victim had retrieved his own firearm.

This case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Bryan Hoskins and Detective Arras Wilson of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department.

Before rendering the 15-year sentence, Judge Vazquez heard victim impact statements from the victim’s family and friends.
