Vegetation Fire, Big Sur (Monterey County)

Monterey, CA – Around midnight on Monday, December 16, 2013, CAL FIRE received a call to assist with a vegetation fire near Pfeiffer Ridge Road and Highway 1, in Big Sur (Monterey County). CAL FIRE assisted the Los Padres National Forest and the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade, along with other local government agencies responding. As of 2:15 a.m., there are 13 engines, 6 crews, and 1 bulldozer for a total of about 130 firefighters.

Evacuations are in progress; residents are evacuating to the north, toward the Carmel area until an evacuation center is set up. At least one structure has been damaged by the fire. The fire is estimated at 100 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation; there have been no reported injuries at this time.

California is in the midst of the driest calendar year on record. Residents are encouraged to exercise extreme caution when in or near the wildland or open areas to prevent a fire. It is important that everyone monitor the weather and be on the lookout for fires. If fires occur in the area, be prepared to follow all instructions of fire and law enforcement officials if an evacuation is ordered. Each person and family should insure that they are “Set” for a potential emergency situation and prepared to activate the “Go” (evacuation) portion in a calm and safe manner.
