Dave Douglas Quintet Performs at Gardener Ranch in Carmel Valley, Sunday, September 15

Monterey, CA; 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival Showcase Artist, trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas and his Quintet will perform his first public concert on the Monterey Peninsula prior to his appearance at the 56th Monterey Jazz Festival on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Gardener Ranch in Carmel Valley in celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Big Sur Land Trust. The event, which runs from 12 noon to 4 p.m., includes a lunch buffet; a program hosted by Bill Leahy, Executive Director of the Big Sur Land Trust, and a concert by Dave Douglas Quintet celebrating this milepost occasion for the Land Trust’s conservation work over three decades. The concert will be a sneak preview of the Festival, which begins on September 20, and will benefit Monterey Jazz Festival’s Education Programs and the Big Sur Land Trust.

Dave Douglas and his band are considered some of the most exciting improvisers today. Douglas has released more than 30 recordings since 1993, and his unique contributions to improvised music have earned prestigious awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Aaron Copland Award, two GRAMMY nominations, and Trumpeter, Composer and Jazz Artist of the Year Awards from the Jazz Journalists Association, DownBeat, JazzTimes, and many others. His latest album, Time Travel, was called “first-class post-bop jazz” by the East Bay Express and that “[Douglas] breathes fresh life into the concept of the classic quintet lineup” according to Louisvillemusic.org.

In 2013, Dave Douglas has been exploring unlikely and outdoor locations for audiences for jazz and improvised music through his DD50 Project—where he will perform music in all 50 states, to celebrate his 50th birthday. The quintet also features Jon Irabagon, Matt Mitchell, Linda Oh, and Rudy Royston.
