Update on Watsonville Man Shot at Deadman Campground in Sierra High Country

Kennedy Meadows, CA…During the investigation into the shooting at Deadman Campground, Detectives learned two years ago to the day, 36-year-old Timothy Smith was arrested and charged in San Mateo County with indecent exposure, annoy or molest a minor, and attempted kidnapping. Smith attempted to enter a tent occupied by children at a State Park Campground and engaged in a confrontation with the parents. Smith was arrested and later pled guilty to a charge of engaging in lewd conduct in public. The circumstances between these two cases were found to be eerily similar.

There have been no arrests at this time. The completed case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review at the conclusion of this investigation.

The man shot at the Deadman Campground on July 11th has been identified as 36-year-old Timothy Edward Smith of Watsonville. Next of kin has been notified. As soon as additional information is available for release our office will issue a follow up press release.

Update on Death of Watsonville Man in Shooting Near Kennedy Meadows

Kennedy Meadows, CA…Update from the Tuolumne Sheriff’s Dept…Friday at 1000 AM: The preliminary Investigation into yesterday’s shooting at Deadman’s campground in the Stanislaus National Forest was completed early yesterday evening. Reports indicate that a man and his girlfriend were asleep in their tent when an unassociated 36-year-old Watsonville man entered their tent at approx. 2:00 AM. The woman woke up to the Watsonville man on top of her. The woman yelled to wake up her boyfriend who was next to her in the tent. During the ensuing confrontation, the Watsonville man was shot, causing his death.

Investigators are working closely with the District Attorney’s office on this case. No arrests have been made.

Names are not being released at this time, pending additional investigation and notification of family.
