King City, CA – At approximately 4:09 p.m. today, units from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) responded to a vegetation fire on Lonoak Road, 3 miles east of King City. Four aircraft, two helicopters, nine fire engines, four dozers, three hand crews, a Battalion Chief, and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported that the fire had burned approximately 150 acres, and had potential to go to 1000 acres. At 6:14 p.m. however, the fire has already burned 500 acres and is forty-five percent contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There are no injuries to firefighters during this incident.

CAL FIRE’s objective is to stop 95% of wildfires at less than 10 acres. Even with full fire season staffing and readiness, CAL FIRE depends on the public to promptly report fires so a quick response can be made. To report a fire, think about where the fire is, what’s burning (debris, a house, or grass and brush), how big the fire is (20’ diameter, as big as a house, or bigger than a football field), and what may have started it. Then dial 911. The dispatcher may ask you some questions and have you stay on the line for a few minutes while firefighters respond. Wildfires can strike anywhere at any time.
